The Hobbit

  • Author: J.R.R Tolkein
  • Year published: 1937
  • Genre: Fantasy/Adventure

First of all, I did not know The Hobbit was written in 1937. Thats like, incredibly old.

Second, I quite enjoyed it. I would say it is a quite mundane read, but it really captures the essence of what I like in adventure novels. Characters running from one peril to the next, where previous actions bleed into future plot points are my favourite parts of an adventure novel. Struggles are a part of the fun :).

On first thought, it really brings back the Geronimo Stilton, Kingdom of Fantasy adventure vibes. Although the influence probably goes the other way around.

Also Bilbo Baggins is a great name. Love the alliteration. 10/10.

I do enjoy Tolkein's writing style. Some lovely phrases and prose scattered about. Although some descriptions can get wordy.

The novel is paced quite well and I never felt like a section was dragging on for too long. But I always felt a sense of urgency and tension to keep moving through the events. It's a careful and well executed balance.

I didn't care much for the sections of song. I'm not sure how much to the plot they contributed but my brain automatically glossed over them. I do hope they weren't too important.

Something I do need to research is the riddles with Gollum. I definitely understood almost none of them. My brain is not quite that large.

Would recommend, fun shenanigans.
